Robert Nakamoto

Professor, Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics, University of Virginia

The Nakamoto lab focusses on the mechanisms of active transporters including the FOF1 ATP synthase, the multiple drug resistance ABC transporter P-glycoprotein and the gram negative bacteria Ton-B dependent, vitamin B12 transporter BtuB, using genetics, protein chemistry, spectroscopic approaches, pre-steady state kinetics and thermodynamics analyses. Dr. Nakamoto will be the director of the Protein Expression and Purification Core and participate in the Projects on the P-type and ABC transporters. He and his lab have considerable experience in development of expression systems in bacteria, yeast, insect and mammalian cells for numerous membrane proteins. He was one of the leaders of the molecular biology and protein Core for the Membrane Protein Structural Genomics Consortium and is the Leader of a similar Core for the Structural Biology of Cardiovascular Proteins Program Project.
